I'm bbbbbbbbbaaaaaaaaaaacccccckkkkkkkk!

Okay, so I've been back for more than a few days now. Sorry I haven't been blogging. I have great Vegas pictures, but our internet was down until just a couple of days ago. Hopefully, I can get them all into Flicker tonight.

In the meantime, here are my workout stats since returning home:

Monday, March 16 - Treadmill run, 30 minutes
I was having motivation issues last night....I really, really didn't want to get on the treadmill! But, I eventually got off my rear and did it. Thirty minutes at a fairly easy pace. In the final 15 minutes, I decided to add some incline to about 3.5 just to make things more interesting...hehehehehehe. When did I become so sadistic? :-)

Sunday, March 15 - Swim Lessons, 1 1/2 hours
Fellow tri-girl, Kelly, coordinated a group swim class for us at FINS. The instructor, Liam, was awesome. He took us through all kinds of drills to help break down every piece of the freestyle stroke and teach us proper technique. I learned a lot! I didn't realize there was supposed to be rotation going on...that alone helped me alot with being able to take a breath without lifting my head. We did zipper arms, shark fins, catch-up, etc. Now I just need to get back to the pool and put it all into practice!

Saturday, March 14 - Long Run, 6-miles
Actually, my original intent was do run 10-miles. However, Mother Nature did not cooperate. About 1 1/2 hours before the hubby was scheduled to come home from work, the heavens opened and it started raining. And it didn't stop! Since I knew I wouldn't be able to get in a run on Sunday, I said "screw it!" and ran anyway. The 10-miler turned into a 6-miler...there's only so much of the soaked clothes and squishy shoes a gal can take! By mile 5 the water had soaked through both shirts and my running tights and I was starting to get cold. I guess 6 is better than skipping the run altogether!

Friday, March 13 - Ab Ripper X, 15 minutes
No time for a lengthy workout, since I wanted to have some quality family time after work. I did get in the 15-minute Ab Ripper X workout though...my goal is to continue doing this at least 2x per week. Oh, and my quads were super sore from yesterday's spin class...all that "hill climbing" got me!

Thursday, March 12 - Spin Class
As usual, spin class kicked my arse. But, it was needed because I didn't get any type of cardio workout in during our trip. We did a ton of walking up and down the strip, and we did a little hiking at Red Rock Canyon one day, so that has to count for something!

Saturday Run

It was one of those "Oh Crap!" "Oh my God!" mornings!

I woke up late on Saturday morning - usually I am out the door by 6:00 am and because we were being joined by Kingwood Fit this morning, I was planning to leave no later than 5:50 am.

6:10

When I woke up to the sound of Jason Mraz, I saw 6:10 on the alarm clock. For whatever reason, the volume was really low. I immediately jumped out of bed and said "Oh $@&%*!". I threw on my clothes, grabbed my PB&J from the fridge along with my fuel belt and ran out the door. During this craziness, I tossed around the idea of going back to bed, but there would be NONE of that! LOL!

I pulled in at Luke's right at 6:30, but everyone was already gone. The guy on the radio just said it was 6:30 am, so it confirmed the time for me. I jumped out of my car and thought, "Man, I need to pee. I didn't pee!". But I saw runners heading out of the parking lot and I just ran. I saw Coach Bill as I ran by, but for whatever reason forgot to grab a route card. I just thought to myself, "Run! Run and maybe you can catch up!" I really thought I could catch up. After awhile, I looked at my watch and my average pace was 10:18. Then, I stopped to walk briefly so I could ask another group of 5/1ers the route. I toyed with the idea of running with them, but they were running a bit slower. So, I ran some more. I didn't want to stop, but I HAD to stop at the bathroom at North Shore...it was the only one that I knew of that would be on the route. Then, I ran some more. I ended up running the 1st few miles at a 10:20 pace. I decided that if I found my group, I'd run the entire 12 but if I didn't I would do the 8. It was about that time that I decided I'd better slow down or I wouldn't even finish 8! I had gotten conflicting information about the 8-miler route, so I just decided to run 4 and turn around.

My Garmin hit 4 miles and I decided to go a bit farther. I finally decided to turn around...I don't even remember where I was. According to one person I knew who was still going forward, I was a little less than a mile from Kuykendahl. I toyed with the idea of continuing on, but the adrenaline from the rushing around was wearing off and I decided to stick to my 8-mile plan. Lucky for me, on the return trip I met up with another Wfitter, Bittney, who was running 4/1s and was running exactly my pace. We ran the rest of the route together and talked about our kids, work, etc. (She has a 2-month old and has already worked up to 8-miles!!!)

When I made it in, it turned out that I had run 8.8 miles in 1:43...an 11:37 pace and I am sure I did not have a negative split! I felt a bit like a weenie for not doing the entire 12 and even toyed with the idea of doing a lap around the neighborhood when I got home just because. But, I didn't. Once I made it home, I was done. The kiddo wanted eggs, the baby wanted me :-) and I decided to just call it a day.

This morning, the first time I went up the stairs I felt an awful pain in my knee! It felt like my IT Band, but it's weird because it didn't hurt at all during the run yesterday. This evening, I laid down with the kiddo to read a book at bedtime and when I got up, it hurt even more. I was all dressed to do P90X, but after pressing on my knee a little, I can barely walk on it! I even called my Dr's office, but the next available appointment with my doctor is January 6....so, I ended up making an appointment with some random doctor for Tuesday morning and will call a different orthopedic in the morning to see if I can get in there tomorrow. Please keep your fingers crossed that it's nothing!!!

Almost there...

Wednesday, 11/12 - P90X, Legs & Shoulders - 58 minutes
OMG my butt and legs hurt today. I must have stepped it up a bit on this workout, because I am not usually this sore! But, it was a great workout!

Thursday, 11/13 - Treadmill run, 20 minutes, 11:30 pace
Easy peasy run on the ol' dreadmill. The hill and shin are aching a bit, but nothing to worry about.

*************************************

It's almost time to head to the hill country....I have mine and the kiddo's stuff packed up and ready to go! I'll be at a Wellness Symposium most of the day, but will be sneaking out early so we can hit the road before the traffic gets bad. I decided on my new long-sleeve under armour top with my capris...but, I'm bringing the running skirt too just in case. LOL!

*************************************
In other news, I went to see nutritionist extraordinaire, Catherine, today! She did a metabolic rate test and gave me some great tips. Apparently, my metabolic rate is slightly higher than average, which means if I do what I'm supposed to be doing, I should lose the weight!
And, I found out that I am not eating enough calories! I've lost over 5 lbs in the past 4 weeks and that was eating only 1400 calories a day. Based on the amount of exercise I do, I should be able to eat 1800-1900 calories a day and still lose weight weekly! But, I have to eat the right foods, which is my big challenge (ummm, remember the Halloween candy?). If I keep eating the 1400 calories, I will keep losing weight but I could eventually slow my metabolism.
And, she recommended this cookbook - Cooking Light 5 Ingredient 15 Minute Cookbook - which I have already ordered from Amazon.com. We also talked about getting the kiddo to eat our food instead of chicken nuggets and macaroni everyday.
I think I can hit my goal weight with a little help from the expert!

About last night...

What a night - I was hot, sweaty and gasping for breath...

Wednesday, 11/5 - P90X, Plyometrics, 1 hour
Get your mind out of the gutter people. I was doing the P90X Plyometric workout. It's the 1st time since Ike that I've done it and man, I could tell! For the past 6 weeks, I've been skipping the cardio P90X workouts and only doing the strength training and core workouts. I justified that by thinking that my training runs were enough cardio for the week. I didn't realize until last night how much I was cheating myself out of an awesome workout. I think I will start incorporating at least one P90X cardio workout into my weekly exercise schedule. Seriously ya'll, I was dying before the warm-up was even over. I know running is a cardio workout, but this is a totally different kind of cardio. The hour-long routine is comprised of lunges and squats but with jumps in between, plus a just a lot of jumping and hopping. I just need to remember to wear my heart rate monitor from now on. Anyway, it's crazy tough and I LOVE it. I forgot that in the past 6 weeks, so there will be lots more plyo to come!

***************************************

Tonight I'm heading to Luke's for a little party just for the store's 4th anniversary. There are supposed to be some nice discounts on everything and there will be tasty treats and cocktails. Woohoo! It's time for new shoes, so I am definitely taking advantage of that discount. I might even get a new running skirt too!

***************************************
So post election, the 1st thing that popped into my head was the song "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine)" by REM. And you know what? I do feel fine. I don't mean it literally, like, it's really the end of the world. I mean it in a good way - optimistic for the best. Some people are so stinkin' dramatic about our new President-Elect and think the sky is literally falling and have that fear-mongering mentality. Puh - lease people, get ahold of yourselves! I didn't vote for him, but hey, I was cool with whatever happened.
Peace-out!

Weekend (with pics!)

Saturday
Saturday was my 1st day back to class. Overall, it went well. My International Management class was small - 11 people. It was pretty fun, we did some role playing about different cultures and our final group project will require us to create a video about another country. Also, I have to interview a Manager from another country about the culture of that country....anyone want to volunteer??? Finance actually went pretty well too. I think the prof is going to be great, which definitely helps! After school, the kiddo and I headed to the playground for some fun. I spent Saturday night doing homework and reading my textbooks while the hubby watched UFC. Fun...

Sunday
Sunday I made it to the park a little after 6:35 am. As usual, the park was hopping with activity. Lots of runners and walkers everywhere! The weather felt much better than last week. I decided to do the route that tri-bunny suggested again. I went out of the park, took a right on Woodway, followed Woodway to Chimney Rock, then hung a left on Tanglewood, another left on San Felipe and then a left on Post Oak. I loved running through Tanglewood! There were several other runners and walkers, and everyone was friendly and said good morning or hello. My favorite was an eldery woman being pushed by a younger man in a wheelchair. She had a wide-brimmed red hat on and said good morning. As I was running in the opposite direction, I heard her say, "She's running in a skirt. How nice!". I had to chuckle. I've been seeing runners wear skirts for quite awhile now, but I still manage to get a funny look from someone on every LR.

My run was only supposed to be 6 miles, but I didn't account for the extra distance between the tennis center and Woodway. The total distance ended up being 7.71 miles. Overall, the run went well. I started a bit too fast with my 1st mile clocking in at 10:40. I thought I hit the autolap button at the end of my 1st mile, but didn't, so I have no split times. Against my better judgement, I decided to use the remainder of the accelerade in the fridge. Bad decision! Somewhere around mile 6, what I am assuming was the accelerade (even though I diluted it)really upset my stomach. Lesson learned...no more accelerade! The remainder of the run was slow a combination of running and walking. This made the run feel like it was going to last forever! My average pace went from 11:10 to 11:20! However, that's still much faster than the McMillan suggested long run pace of 11:37 to 12:37. Oops!

Later, I took the kiddo to playgroup where she learned about water balloons. :-) Next, we took the kiddo to see The Wiggles. Oh my God, she loved it! She sang and danced to the tunes, and to be honest, I think I had just as much fun as she did. (and I never thought I would say that!) I can certainly see why The Wiggles are so successful. They go into the audience and have a really interactive show. If you have kiddos in The Wiggles age range and they come to your city - don't miss it! Here are a couple of pics...we didn't get to take many because the batteries on DH's camera died. He went all over the Toyota Center looking for a vendor who sold them, but was SOL. Oh well! There are a couple more on Flickr, so just click on the pics over to the right to see them. You can also click here to see a video clip from the concert.

Here's the kiddo waiting for the show to begin:

Here's Ben...my favorite Wiggles dancer. Yeah, that's right, I have a favorite!

Here are all four Wiggles on stage singing:

The park, school, movies, running and whackings

The weekend just flew by again! Friday, the hubby met me at the park with the kiddo. I ran a couple of miles before they arrived, then met them at the playground. The kiddo loves being outside, which made it difficult for us to convince her to leave when it's finally time to go.

Saturday was my 1st day of classes. Ethics was first and while it will not be a cake walk, it doesn't seem too frightening. We have a case study due each week, a mid-term and a big final group presentation. Economics, on the other hand, seems pretty scary. There are 3 tests, a reaction paper each week, 2 group projects, discussion questions, etc. etc. etc. Looks like I will beat the Houston summer heat by spending lots of time in the library. Joy.

Saturday night the hubby and I actually had a date night. It's been a few months, so we were long overdue. We had dinner and then headed to the movies to see Spiderman 3. I LOVED it! The movie had everything I liked about the series...the action and special effects. Plus, there's a bit of love story. The hubby thought it was "okay" and told me that it wasn't what he expected. When I asked him why, he just said, "I just thought it would be like the other two." I asked him to elaborate and he mumbled something about the mushy love story. Boys. On the way to pick up the kiddo, we had a lengthy discussion about what happens next in the comic books. Seriously, I thought he was going to run out to the storage shed and start digging out his old comic book collection to find Spiderman #300 (where Spidey gets the black suit). Boys. Did I already say that?

This morning, I headed to the park for a couple of loops. It was humid as heck! Not much to report, except that the foot didn't hurt at all until I made it back home. Oh, and that blister is back. Strange. I really didn't feel like running. In fact, I've felt like that for the past week or so. I'm hoping that running with a group again after the summer semester will help. I just have to make it to mid-August...that seems really far away. After playgroup and grocery store, I managed to read a chapter of Ethics and then took the kiddo to the neighborhood pool. I wanted to squeeze in another chapter after the went to bed, but I had a shift in priorities - The Sopranos. Yep, only 2 episodes and then no more...and tonight it seems they were making up for the lack of whackings in the last season. Woohooo! ;-)

So, looks like a late night with the books.

Junk Miles

Okay, I'll admit, I don't really know what the term "junk miles" means. But, the term came to mind during my run yesterday.

All day I was so excited - the hubby and the kiddo were going to meet me at the park after work so we could run a loop together and then take the kiddo to the playground! I know it's kinda silly to get excited about that, but the last time we tried a family run at the park was LAST Memorial Day! It's rare that I actually convince the hubby to get out there with me. Most of the time, one of our schedules doesn't allow it. And this time, it was HIS idea!

About 30 minutes before I was scheduled to leave work, the hubby called. Apparently, the kiddo got about 10 mosquito bites on the playground at school this afternoon! Mosquitos love her...it sucks! Her bites swell up and she's just miserable with itching. So, the hubby thought it would be a bad idea for her to be out among them again. I don't know why, but I felt my energy just go out of me after that. I'm usually the type to just go with the flow, so I don't know what happened. I think it was because I was so excited about our family run all day...after the plans changed, I just wasn't feeling like a run.

I went anyway. I'm sure my pace was much, much slower than Monday. (I forgot my Garmin.) And, it was hot! To top it off, my left foot was killing me! The area at the base of my toes (where they connect to my foot) hurt like heck. I've been feeling this pain for awhile now, but it usually only hurts when I walk. Yesterday I noticed it hurt when I was running too. Today, it was the same thing - it hurt to run and it hurt to walk. Grrrr... Speaking of walking, I stopped at two of the water fountains and walked for a minute after each one. Then, I grabbed some gatorade at the Luke's tent and walked some more. I finally decided to stop being a wuss and just get the run over with. I tried rationalizing with myself

this sucks, it hurts to walk and to run...I'm just going to walk

hmmm...plus, it's easier to shift my weight just right when I'm walking so I don't feel it as much

Well, if I run, I'll finish my loop faster and then I won't have to worry about pain

...so I ran the rest of the way and called it a day. I call it my junk miles, because there wasn't a ton of effort given. I was running for the sake of running. Well, that and for the sake of burning some calories. :-) I don't know what to do about the foot. I'll probably do Si6 tomorrow and Friday in order to give it a rest. I'm still running the 5K on Saturday though. Luckily for me, my new medical insurance kicks in next week...I may need to see a doctor. Ugh!

Oh and by the way, last night's LOST finale was AWESOME! Now I remember why I love the show. Dang it and the next season doesn't start until February. If it's anything like the 2nd 1/2 of this season, it will be worth the wait!

33:37

That's last year's time in the Astro's Race for the Pennant 5K. I am pretty sure, heat and all, I can beat that with no problem. My goal is to maintain a 10 minute pace. Why not try to beat the Easter Bun Run time of 30:15, you ask??? Here are a few reasons:

1) It's going to be 20-30 degrees warmer
2) The course has more turns...the Easter Bun Run was strictly out and back
3) There are actually couple of "hills" if I remember correctly...the Easter Bun Run was flat, flat, flat
3) I don't feel I got in true quality runs over the last few weeks of school (In other words, I had a shift in priorities and was a slacker in the running dept)
4) I've gotten in 2 weeks of "mock" speedwork on the dreadmill...not enough to make a vast improvement

Excuses, excuses...yada, yada. The goal is to have an awesome time. My nephew, Stephen is also running the 5K and is probably going to kick my arse! He runs cross country at his high school and doesn't understand why anyone would need to stop and get water during a 3 mile run. My younger nephew, Anthony, is going to run the kids 1k with the kiddo. All in all, this is going to be a fun event!

As for my fitness this week...I am still thoroughly enjoying week #2 of my freedom from school. This is pretty much how I feel right now:

Yesterday I did 45 minutes of Si6 in the morning and a loop around the park after work. I managed to make it around in 28:57, which is 9:59 pace with 2 quickie walk breaks. For me, that's pretty good...on the same date last year, my loop was 30:30.

Today, was a quickie 2-miler at the park with the kiddo in the new stroller. Did I mention that I LOVE the new stroller??? I do. It was a short run, mainly because I wanted to make sure the kiddo had plenty of time to play at the playground. Not that any amount of time would be enough for her when it comes to the playground. I think I'm going to try to fit in playground time every week when school is not too crazy. The kiddo loves running around outdoors! And, she goes to sleep much faster too. ;-)

Little bit of running

Zimm's. I like it! I headed there after work for an hour of fun and frivolity with my "working mom's" group. It was a nice little escape from the day. - I've been wanting to attend one of these events for awhile now but it always seems like I have school stuff to do. Afterwards, I headed home to spend some time with the kiddo before bedtime. Once she was asleep, I hopped on the treadmill for some mock speedwork.

I took Barbara's advice and based it on time, rather than distance. I did a 1 mile warm up, followed by 1 min fast/2 min recovery x8 with a 1.0 incline and a cool down. My only complaint is the amount of time it takes for the belt to speed up & slow down. Other than that, it wasn't horrible. I was sweating profusely and breathing hard, but that was to be expected.
