If it's not one thing...

it's another!

So tell me, is it normal to always have some kind of running-related pain? I feel like if my back isn't aching, my shins are. And when my shins finally feel better, my foot hurts.

A prime example - I've noticed for a long time (a few months) that my shins are ALWAYS sore. Always. They may not hurt during a run, but I'll get home and the kiddo will bump them and OUCH! Then, I'll touch them and realize that they're both really tender. What's up with that?

I know God gave us legs for some reason, but maybe mine weren't made for running. I'm trying to remember by dance and gymnastics days..I know I would be sore the day after a good workout. I remember barely being able to lift my arms after a hard day of uneven bars or walking funny after a long day of practicing tour jetes. But, I don't remember if there was always some nagging little ache or pain. (Of course then, I was much, much younger!)

So, tell me...is this normal? If it is, great! I'll know that I'm not a weirdo and that it just comes with the territory. I'll just be sure to keep a supply of ice packs in my freezer. If it's not, maybe I should consider a different form of exercise.

Gotta Run..... said...

My thoughts are that when I am old I will hurt from something but atleast I will have some great running adventures to tell.

My pains move around from place to place. Guess it just reminds me that I am alive.

I am so, so, so glad you asked this!!I haven't run in almost two weeks now and my shin on my left leg is still tender!! I do feel like at one point I hit a groove where things didn't hurt but the last few months it seemed like something was always wrong. So from me you get a yes.

I have similar problems. Do you have a foam roller? There's an exercise you can do with that, which will improve the situation.

I too am having shin pains, mostly in my left leg, tho sometimes the right one lets me know it's there too. I agree it is something that seems to move around, thigh, calf, ankle, foot, toe, lower back, thigh...and the circuit goes on...I pushed it off to be older for myself.

Are we supposed to "suck it up" and "run thru the pain", that is what I find myself doing most often and usually with a mile or so on the street it mostly goes away, unless I'm doing hills.

Bob I've heard of the foam roller, do they work?

It's so weird that you bring this up! I was just thinking about the days when I was younger and could run which seemed like forever and never really hurt (other then pulled muscles) But now it feels like my shins and my feet are always hurting. Never enough pain to make me stop running but that annoying small dull pain. I always just chalk it up to being a beginner runner, please tell me this isn't going to get worse LOL

Honestly? Here's my 2 cents. Soreness good. Pain - not so good. Sore to me says I'm pushing myself. Pain says I went too far/too fast.

I hope that's not the case for you!

Barbara is right. Sore good. Pain bad. If nothing hurts, you have not exerted enough. With running, your body always finds the weakest link. That weakest point will hurt until it is strengthened. Then running will manifest athe new weakest point in your body.
